There is a lot of banding about with the words Knowledge Management...

I’ve noticed that the term “KM Strategy” seems to have different meanings for different people. I think it would be useful to establish a common definition?

Definitions seem to range from:

A description of the approach an organisation wishes to follow in the management of these assets ie: a description of approaches, methodologies and tool.
A document describing the role of knowledge in the organisation. ie: a description of key knowledge and its role, which is used to help projects, services and individuals identify the actions they should be taking.
A project or service level description of the working level actions that will be undertaken to develop, import or export knowledge.

I started looking at what a business strategy should address. Specifically, a business strategy is a document that defines the direction of the business with sufficient clarity to enable decisions to be made and action taken. Therefore, to me, a knowledge management strategy should be defined as a document that “articulates the role of knowledge in the business with sufficient clarity that it enables decisions to be made”; as such it must identify key knowledge, knowledge gaps, commercially sensitive know-how, etc.
Most knowledge management strategies I see only address (1) – how an organisation intends to manage its knowledge.
What definitions do other people and organisations use? Have we asked around!

And the burning question how do we fit this into a IT specification which will help us deliver the correct infrastructure, especially when most KM systems are encouraged not mandatory!!!
